On a farm near Wallaceburg in what is now Ontario, the McDonald family reported stones and bullets flying through windows, fires and phantom footsteps. The story ends with a silver bullet and a witch with a broken arm. It was written down decades later and is told as local folklore.
A farm family in Robertson County, Tennessee, said a spirit knocked, spoke and tormented them for four years. The story was printed in full only in 1894, and historians treat much of it as folklore built around a real family.
Since the 1930s, people around Victoria, British Columbia, have reported a long, horse-headed sea serpent called 'Caddy'. A carcass from a whale's stomach in 1937 was claimed as a baby. Zoologists now favour known animals, and many scientists read the famous 1937 carcass as a decomposing basking shark.
Lake Champlain, between New York, Vermont and Quebec, has its own lake monster, 'Champ', with sightings back to the 1800s and a famous 1977 photo. Investigators trace the photo to a log or wave, and the 1609 'Champlain sighting' to a mistranslation.
In 1995 Puerto Rican farmers found livestock dead with puncture wounds, and a witness described a spiny, big-eyed creature. The 'goat-sucker' spread across the Americas. Investigator Benjamin Radford traced the original description to a sci-fi movie, and later 'chupacabras' to mangy coyotes and dogs.
In the woods along New Brunswick's Dungarvon River, lumbermen said a murdered camp cook's ghost let out unearthly whoops at night until a priest laid it to rest. Michael Whelan's 1912 ballad fixed the story; folklorists have collected it since.
Named in 1960 to rhyme with Ogopogo, Manipogo is the lake monster of Lake Manitoba. A 1962 photograph shows something long and dark in the water. A provincial park and a winter festival carry its name.
In the Brazilian Amazon, rubber tappers and riverside communities tell of the mapinguari, a huge, foul-smelling, shaggy creature. Ornithologist David Oren proposed it might be a surviving giant ground sloth. Expeditions found no animal, and most scholars treat it as folklore that may carry a memory of extinct megafauna.
For a century, missionaries and adventurers have looked in the swamps of the northern Republic of the Congo for an animal described as a living sauropod. Dozens of expeditions found nothing. Researchers trace the idea to European dinosaur fashion as much as to local tradition.
In 1908 two prospectors, the McLeod brothers, were found dead along the South Nahanni River, their heads reportedly missing. More deaths followed and newspapers named it Headless Valley. Today it is a UNESCO-listed national park; the deaths look like the hazards of a brutal wilderness, embellished.
Since the 1790s, treasure hunters have dug into a small island in Nova Scotia's Mahone Bay, chasing a shaft said to hold pirate gold, Templar relics or Shakespeare's manuscripts. More than two centuries, six deaths and a TV series later, no treasure has been found.
British Columbia's Okanagan Lake has a resident monster with a music-hall name. Scholars trace it from Syilx water-spirit traditions through settler sightings to a tourism mascot. No specimen, no clear photo, plenty of folklore.
'Sasquatch' comes from a Halq'eméylem word for a hairy wild being, popularized by a schoolteacher in Harrison Hot Springs in the 1920s. The village now calls itself Sasquatch country. Scientists find no evidence of an unknown ape; the creature lives on as folklore and a tourism icon.
Several Edo-period texts describe a round vessel that washed ashore in Hitachi Province with a beautiful foreign woman inside, holding a box she would not let go. It is now read as folklore and a popular story of its time, though a 2014 find of a document naming a real village sharpened the debate.
Since the 19th century, settlers have reported a tall, hairy ape-like figure in the Australian bush, later called the yowie. Folklorists link the colonial stories to Aboriginal traditions of hairy beings, which are not the same thing. No specimen has ever been found.
Australia's most famous ghost story says Frederick Fisher's spirit sat on a fence rail and pointed to his own grave. The 1826–27 newspapers report the murder, the search, an Aboriginal tracker and a trial, but no ghost. The apparition first appears in print in an anonymous poem in 1832, and in 1841 the man said to have seen it denied it.
In December 1900, families living in the ruins of the abandoned Fort Lowell said a tall figure in high boots and a soldier's uniform was coming out of the walls at night. Shots and dogs couldn't catch it. Within weeks two territorial papers had turned it into a running joke, and the people who first reported it were nearly written out of their own story.
Haunted Canyon, in the mountains between Superior and Globe, is said to have been named by a prospector who sat out a terrifying monsoon there in 1891. That story is hard to pin down. What the papers do show is the name in casual use by 1893, and by 1896 a Phoenix paper selling the canyon as “an ideal summer resort.”
In May 1851 a Memphis paper reported a giant, hair-covered “wild man” chasing cattle in Greene County, Arkansas. Within five weeks the item had run from Little Rock to Vermont, and by December it was in a Wellington newspaper. That's a lot of reprints, but every one of them goes back to one story.
Arizona's Rim country has its own hairy giant. This short explainer covers how far back it can be traced in print. The answer is not very far: the earliest known use of the name is a 1967 newspaper article that we haven't found yet.
In the winter of 1905, Christchurch papers reported a masked man in a luminous coat frightening women at night. By October the scare had reached the Hutt, where a local paper investigated one sighting and found an old white cow in the moonlight.
For about a decade, frontier Arizona told stories of a huge red animal carrying a corpse. An 1893 newspaper said a rancher finally shot it, and it was a camel, laced with knotted rawhide. The camels were real. Almost everything else rests on a single story.
Not an anomaly, just the history of a holiday. In 1885 a Yuma paper had to explain Halloween as a custom from back East. By 1901 Tombstone boys were swapping the lawyer's and the grocer's signs, and by 1910 Winslow parties had a haunted house and a witch's den.
In July 1937 something huge kept surfacing in an eddy of the White River below Newport. Within weeks there was a fence, a 25-cent admission, barbecue, a “Monster Dance” and a hired diver with an eight-foot harpoon. He found nothing. In 1973 the state Senate made the river a monster refuge anyway.
Arizona's Bigfoot lore is often traced to a 1903 Williams News front page. The archive shows something else: a lower Grand Canyon tall tale, syndicated coast to coast under three different credits, and mocked in Phoenix within two weeks.
