  The Copper Scroll: A Treasure List From Qumran

  One Dead Sea Scroll is not parchment but copper, and lists dozens of hiding places for gold and silver. Found in 1952 and cut open in Manchester in 1955, it is real and ancient. Whether the treasure was ever real, nobody knows.

  Tall el-Hammam: The "Sodom" Airburst Paper That Was Retracted

  In 2021 a team argued in Scientific Reports that a cosmic airburst destroyed a Bronze Age city in the Jordan Valley, possibly inspiring the story of Sodom. Critics found errors in the data and the airburst physics. The journal retracted the paper in April 2025; some authors disagree.
