The last known thylacine died in a Hobart zoo on 7 September 1936. Two years later an official party was searching western Tasmania for survivors, and eighty years after that the state government was still logging reports of striped animals crossing roads at dusk. This case follows the records, not the animal.

For a month in the autumn of 1894, people on South Main Street in Tucson reported a night prowler that changed shape: a dog, a hog, a burro, a man on all fours. Armed parties hunted it, and rumor blamed an elderly Tohono O'odham woman. Then the Citizen announced that “the Main street spook has been laid.” It was a thief in a pillow-case mask.

A golden-trailed fireball crossed the Salt River Valley at dinnertime on 6 October 1906 and broke up with a boom. Callers feared an explosion, the Weather Bureau observer timed it with his watch, and Tucson and Phoenix each said it passed right over them. — Latest update (Oct 4, 2026): Two more Arizona Republican items added. On 17 Oct 1906 (p.10, “The Late Meteor”) the paper printed a letter from O. F. Thornton at Schell Station, dated 12 Oct: he saw a fireball “about the size of a large orange” burst before reaching Fish Creek hill, and a camper near Roosevelt and a teamster from Tortilla station each told him they had seen it explode. On 20 Oct (p.7, “Meteors to Burn”) the paper reported a second, smaller meteor seen on Thursday evening about 6 o'clock, plus a reader's “blood red star” that turned out to be the police signal light over city hall. Neither item changes the explanation: one bright fireball, widely seen.

One late-evening thunderstorm in July 2012, a team studying ordinary lightning on China's Qinghai Plateau recorded a glowing ball rising from a ground strike about 900 meters away. Their spectrum found silicon, iron and calcium, the stuff of soil. It's the best instrumental record of natural ball lightning, and it doesn't settle what ball lightning is. — Latest update (Nov 4, 2022): THIN (abstracts only). Logged 13 Oct 2026; not new research in 2026. Two follow-up papers share authors with the original 2014 Physical Review Letters report (Cen, Yuan, Xue). The ledger has read only their abstracts. In Physics of Plasmas (4 Nov 2022), An et al. re-examined the high-speed spectra of the 2012 Qinghai object. They describe a mostly steady brightness with a regular oscillation: soil elements (Si, Fe, Ca lines) give most of the light, and air elements (N, O lines) drive the oscillation. Temperature estimates depend on which lines are used, from 7,170–11,410 K for oxygen lines down to a mean of 2,700 K for the continuum. The authors read this as a hotter energy-source core. Earlier, Wang et al. in Applied Physics Letters (Feb 2018) estimated a peak luminous intensity of about 1.24×10^5 cd early in the event, and about 5.9×10^4 cd for most of its life. All three papers come from one group working from one recording, and none is an independent replication. Status stays open.

On the evening of November 17, 1896, a bright light drifted southwest over Sacramento, and by the next day the city was full of people who said they'd heard voices, singing and orders shouted from it. The San Francisco Call ran it across its front page. This is where America's great airship wave starts. — Latest update (Oct 3, 2026): Local paper added. Sacramento's own morning paper, the Record-Union, covered the sighting on 18 Nov 1896 (p.4) under “WHAT WAS IT? An Apparition Wandering Through the Atmosphere.” Per the research desk's check of the page image, it describes a big ball of light seen between 6 and 7 p.m., moving slowly for more than half an hour, with some witnesses reporting singing voices. Unlike the Call, it leaned skeptical: it offered an illuminated balloon, and joked that perhaps a “stray meteor was hunting for the rest of the gang.” The light and its timing match the Call's witnesses. The airship does not appear in the Record-Union's account. Ledger status unchanged (disputed).

For two centuries people around New York's Seneca Lake, and later the Carolina coast, have heard deep booms like distant cannon. The USGS says many booms are human-made and some are tiny, shallow earthquakes. The famous “Seneca legend” about them comes from an 1850 James Fenimore Cooper story written as political satire. — Latest update (Oct 19, 2026): Two primary records behind the Cornell story. (1) The final report to the New York State Water Resources Institute (Morin & Sparks) gives the numbers: 14 pockmarks and two control sites sampled in September 2025; dissolved methane 0.047–0.102 nmol/mL and chloride 124–143 mg/L, neither higher inside the pockmarks than at the controls. Methane tracked dissolved oxygen and turbidity more than location. The authors say there was no active venting while they sampled, but episodic releases can't be ruled out. The dataset is deposited on Zenodo (7 Apr 2026, files restricted). (2) Cornell registered a seismic network, FDSN code YA (2026–2027), 'Seneca Drums Pilot Project': a small one-year array, modelled on its Cayuga Lake network, to test whether lake-bottom methane explosions leave a seismic signature. The registration describes a plan to start in March 2026; we have not confirmed the array is recording or that any data is public. Still no recorded boom tied to a cause; status stays open.

Arizona's Bigfoot lore is often traced to a 1903 Williams News front page. The archive shows something else: a lower Grand Canyon tall tale, syndicated coast to coast under three different credits, and mocked in Phoenix within two weeks. — Latest update (Oct 9, 2026): Another reprint. The Ann Arbor Argus-Democrat (Michigan) ran the story on 3 July 1903 as “Wild Man Of Arizona: Strange Being Encountered by a Hunter In the Grand Canyon,” with the same opening and the same account attributed to I. W. Stevens of Cedar, Colo. So the story reached a Midwestern weekly. Caveat: this is a single OCR transcription on the Ann Arbor District Library's Old News site. It shows no credit line and no page number, so it tells us nothing about where the story first ran. The origin remains unresolved.

A Cody, Wyoming resident says the white lights he watched rise over Cedar Mountain all last winter came back in late September 2026. Every account traces to one local news report. Open, and most likely prosaic, until someone lines up flight tracks and sky charts. — Latest update (Oct 11, 2026): A second, separate measurement of the footage points the same way as the forum work, by a different route. On 29 Sep 2026, UAP Globe, an independent UFO case-file site, posted a frame-by-frame analysis of the one clip of Krubeck's that Cowboy State Daily put on YouTube, a 43-second vertical phone video. Its tracking found that the seven to eleven bright points on screen all shift together by the same amount between frames, meaning the movement comes from the hand-held camera panning rather than from lights flying in different directions. That undercuts the main reason given for calling the footage unexplained. The site also measured color on the untouched frames and found one point that stays strongly red for the whole clip and another that reads blue-white. Steady red is what aircraft navigation lights and tower beacons look like, so the claim that the lights lacked aviation lighting isn't supported by this video either. Assuming the clip was shot on an evening around 24 Sep, the site checked planet positions with NASA JPL's Horizons ephemeris and found no planets in the western sky, but it placed the bright orange star Arcturus low in the west and blue-white Vega higher up, with a nearly full Moon washing out fainter stars. Its reading is that the clip shows a handful of bright stars swept across the frame by a moving phone. Caveats: this is one hobby site's analysis, which we haven't re-run; it assumes a late-September filming date that the Metabunk thread's NUFORC match calls into question; and it says plainly that the behavior Krubeck describes, such as lights rising, converging and stopping under a laser, doesn't appear in the published clip and so can't be tested from it. No agency has commented. Status stays open, still leaning prosaic, with the witness's own description the part no released footage covers.

In April 1890 the Tombstone Epitaph reported that two ranchers had shot a 160-foot winged creature in the desert. A week later a Florence paper reprinted it and signed it “The Epitaph Liar.” The famous photograph of the beast doesn't show up until 1963, and nobody has ever produced one.

A dark sphere over a Los Angeles freeway went viral as an evening traffic-report mystery. The footage is actually from FOX 11’s own chopper stream at twilight on September 15, 2026 — still unidentified, most likely mundane. — Latest update (Sep 25, 2026): Record correction at intake: the viral 12-second clip does not show an evening rush hour, and it was not shot live on Tuesday 22 September. It sits roughly 26 minutes into FOX 11’s archived chopper-camera livestream from the morning of Tuesday 15 September 2026 (about 6:24 a.m. PT, civil twilight). Its first viral appearance was an @UAPWixy repost on X on 22 September; every tabloid write-up we found descends from that single post.
Batch 6 republishes AAWSAP-era Defense Intelligence Reference Documents on warp, wormhole, and antigravity concepts — fringe physics reports ≠ confirmed craft. — Latest update (Oct 19, 2026): The catalogue counts 38, the release has 37. The Exclusion Zone (15 Oct 2026) went through war.gov's own uap-data.csv: every DIRD record says it is 'one of 38 DIRDs produced under ... AAWSAP between 2009 and 2011', but the identifiers run DOW-UAP-D117 to D153, 37 consecutive numbers. The same tranche also holds seven procurement records (D110–D116: statement of objectives, original order, five contract modifications), and the D111 note names Bigelow Aerospace Advanced Space Studies (BAASS) as the contractor. All 37 DIRDs list Las Vegas as their location. The Black Vault had already reported that DIA's 2022 FOIA release was also 37 of 38, and that it appealed the missing one, which it identifies as a SECRET version of the high-energy laser weapons paper. Whether that is the same missing 38th in PURSUE is not established. Single outlet for the catalogue count (checkable against the CSV, not yet re-counted by us).

Parthian/Sasanian jars with copper and iron: König’s battery hypothesis remains popular; many archaeologists favor scroll containers. — Latest update (Oct 19, 2026): New experimental claim, not a settled answer. Independent researcher Alexander Bazes (Sino-Platonic Papers no. 377, January 2026) argues earlier replicas left out two parts of the design, the solder and the ceramic jar, and that together they form a second 'outer' tin-air cell wired in series with the known copper-iron cell. His rebuild reached over 1.4 volts and could electroplate, etch and split water. Chemistry World (23 Jan 2026) reported that some archaeologists who have studied the object aren't convinced, and one said it may not have been a battery at all. A working replica shows the design could make power; it doesn't show the jars were used that way. Status stays disputed.

A planned Inverness trip, Google Earth’s east shore, and three arcs under review — not confirmed Nessie, not dismissed either. — Latest update (Oct 18, 2026): A first named-expert reading of the image. Steve Feltham, a full-time Nessie hunter who has lived at Dores since 1991, told NewsNation that the three shapes look like three Canadian canoes: each shows a small protrusion and a splash he reads as paddle action, with two people per canoe. He still believes something lives in the loch, and said part of his work is ruling out false alarms. The quote was syndicated by BANG Showbiz (28 Sep) and reprinted again on 17 Oct alongside register founder Gary Campbell's general view (to the Press and Journal) that a 'family' of animals lives deep in the loch. Campbell's remark isn't an assessment of Fraser's image, and the register still lists no verdict.
war.gov/UFO hosts rolling unresolved UAP records under PURSUE with explicit “unable to make a definitive determination” framing. — Latest update (Oct 5, 2026): Logged 13 Oct 2026; confidence moderate. On 5 Oct 2026 John Greenewald (The Black Vault) published the Pentagon's reply, dated 30 Sep 2026 (FOIA 26-F-1892), to his 1 Apr 2026 request for the records behind five encounters on the House Oversight declassification task force's list of 31 Mar 2026: “Wiley 2X Zinc,” “Jacker 2X,” “Cactus 1X,” a Coast Guard C-144 infrared observation of 24 Apr 2024, and a Persian Gulf formation. According to two secondary write-ups that both worked from the letter image, AARO found responsive records but withheld them in full under exemption (b)(1), citing E.O. 13526 grounds for military plans and operations and for system vulnerabilities and capabilities. It also cited a (b)(3) withholding under 10 U.S.C. 130c, which covers certain sensitive foreign-government information. The letter also says responsive records are publicly available at war.gov/UFO, and UAP Globe matched videos for these encounters in the PURSUE catalogue, with no paired written reports. Caveats: the letter gives no inventory of what was withheld. “Withheld in full” applies only to the records responsive to this one request, not to UAP records in general. It's a FOIA decision, not a report on what Congress received. The ledger hasn't seen the letter itself at full resolution; no hosted PDF was found.

Yale’s undeciphered illustrated codex: the library dates it to the late 15th or 16th century and does not endorse decipherment claims. — Latest update (Oct 7, 2026): New codicology, not a decipherment. In “Singulion Structure and the Voynich Manuscript” (Digital Medievalist, reported 6 Oct 2026), Colin Layfield (University of Malta) and Lisa Fagin Davis propose that the folded sheets were first kept as a loose stack of single bifolia (“singulions”) and were later bound in the usual nested quires, probably in the mid-to-late 15th century, which would scramble the reading order. Their case rests on a Latent Semantic Analysis of how closely the text on separated pages matches, and on drawings of streams and pipes that run into the gutter and only join up once the sheets are re-stacked. The paper doesn't read the script. Davis links it to palaeographic work suggesting up to five scribes, and floats a reading of the book as communal women's folk knowledge, while saying herself that “you cannot prove that yet.” A separate paper points the other way: Torsten Timm, in Cryptologia (online 7 Sep 2026), argues that the text's gradual drift in vocabulary fits his self-citation hypothesis, under which the text need not carry linguistic meaning.
INDOPACOM forwards ~57 seconds of 2023 IR showing a tracked contrast patch and focus box — informational only, unresolved. — Latest update (Oct 13, 2026): An independent measurement shows PR150 is the most heavily redacted military clip in Release 06. On 12 Oct 2026 the analysis site The Exclusion Zone published frame measurements of all fifteen Release 06 videos. It pulled them from DVIDS, using the department's own file catalogue to find the IDs. Among the ten military electro-optical clips, nine have nearly the same redaction footprint. Solid black boxes permanently cover about 9.5 to 11.5 percent of the frame (median 10.3 percent), sitting where sensor telemetry such as coordinates, heading, field of view and platform ID would be drawn. The site reads this as a standard declassification template. PR150 is the outlier: about 22 percent of its frame is permanently blacked out, roughly double the norm. It is also the lowest-resolution file in the tranche (908 by 512), and the scene itself is almost entirely dark. The same piece checked whether a six-pointed 'star' artefact it had earlier traced to the camera optics in another Yellow Sea clip (PR104) shows up again. It found none in PR150 or the other INDOPACOM clips, only a compact hot return, a tracking reticle and a north indicator. Caveats: this is a single outlet's measurement, and we have not re-run it. The site itself says redaction doesn't tell you what the object is. The missing fields are exactly the ones needed to work out range, size and speed. No official explanation has been given for why PR150 is covered more heavily than its siblings.
CENTCOM Spheres on IR: Six Objects, ~480 mph

A one-minute infrared clip from a 2025 Middle East platform enters the Pentagon’s sixth UAP release — unresolved, agile, no ET conclusion. — Latest update (Oct 12, 2026): A team of six researchers has put a specific, testable explanation on the record. On 6 Oct 2026 they posted a preprint to arXiv, the open physics server: Jacob Haqq-Misra (Blue Marble Space), Ravi Kopparapu (NASA Goddard), Richard Cloete, Omer Eldadi and Avi Loeb of Harvard's Galileo Project, and Michael Shermer of the Skeptics Society. They measured each of the six objects' brightness frame by frame over a five-second stretch near the end of the clip. Every object pulses steadily at its own rate, between 7.1 and 7.9 times per second and out of step with the others, and its apparent size pulses along with it. Constant-brightness dots the team planted in the video and re-encoded the same way did not pick up the flicker, which they take to rule out compression and the sensor. A flapping wing changes how much of a bird faces the camera, and the team found flying animals in the Galileo Project's own ground-based infrared cameras near Las Vegas pulsing at 3.4 to 10 times per second. The six objects' rates sit inside published wingbeat ranges for birds in cruising flight. On speed, the paper points out that the mission report (D108, which it dates to a 29 July 2025 sighting) marks 480 mph as an estimate and records no laser range. Without a range, the targeting system can only measure where the line of sight meets the ground, so an aircraft flying almost straight at a near-stationary object reads a high ground speed. By the authors' geometry, an object at roughly 60 to 80 percent of the aircraft's height would produce the 480 mph figure. They add that the group's 'simultaneous' turns can come from the sensor swinging while it tracked them. Their conclusion is a small flock of birds, much closer to the aircraft than the crew assumed. Caveats: this is a preprint submitted to Scientific Reports and not yet peer reviewed. The aircraft's altitude is redacted, so the height is a band of solutions rather than a measurement. And a wingbeat rate alone can't name a species. We have not re-run the analysis. The Department of War and AARO have not responded. Status stays open, since the government still lists the clip as unresolved, but there is now a quantitative prosaic reading that the authors say the unredacted sensor and platform data could confirm or refute.

Third weekend of September again: free Main Street crowds, TNT tours, museum lines, and a legend kept alive by gathering — not by a new specimen. — Latest update (Sep 23, 2026): Main Street Point Pleasant revised the weekend turnout upward: WV News (22 Sep 2026) quotes organizers estimating a record ~35,000 attendees over three days, superseding the earlier ~32,000 cellphone-derived unique-attendance figure. Still civic tourism metrics only — no specimen claim.
