  Göbekli Tepe and the "Lost Civilization" Claims

  Hunter-gatherers in southeastern Turkey raised carved stone pillars about 11,500 years ago, before farming took hold. The site rewrote textbooks. It has also become a magnet for claims of a lost advanced civilization and a comet catastrophe, which the excavators reject.

  Tall el-Hammam: The "Sodom" Airburst Paper That Was Retracted

  In 2021 a team argued in Scientific Reports that a cosmic airburst destroyed a Bronze Age city in the Jordan Valley, possibly inspiring the story of Sodom. Critics found errors in the data and the airburst physics. The journal retracted the paper in April 2025; some authors disagree.
