Mothman Festival Returns to Point Pleasant

Third weekend of September again: free Main Street crowds, TNT tours, museum lines, and a legend kept alive by gathering — not by a new specimen.

Locale map

Every third weekend in September, downtown Point Pleasant, West Virginia, remakes itself around a 1966 winged-figure story. For 2026 the official Mothman Festival listed 19–20 September on Main Street: free admission, vendors and food trucks, cosplay, guest speakers, live music at Riverfront Park, tours tied to the old TNT area, the Mothman Museum beside the statue, and a Saturday-night hayride sold cash-only at the info tent.

What the weekend is

Local coverage (WV News, WV MetroNews) framed the return as thousands expected for folklore-meets-street-fair: speaker blocks, riverfront bands, and guided looks at the industrial woodland where early reports clustered. Festival FAQ pages stress family-friendly, mostly free access — museum admission and hayride tickets being the usual paid exceptions — and remind visitors that the hayride is distinct from TNT bus tours.

The organizers’ own copy is frank about the commemorative frame: an annual celebration of the mid-1960s sightings that seeded the red-eyed legend, not a field confirmation of a living cryptid.

Reading the file

Mothman as biology remains folklore and contested eyewitness tradition; Mothman as civic ritual is measurable — dates on a calendar, stages on a riverfront, lines at a museum. This ledger marks the 2026 festival folklore: a documented cultural return that keeps the 1966 story circulating, without treating weekend crowds as evidence of a winged specimen in Mason County.

Local TV framed the same weekend as tens-of-thousands tourism around the 1966 legend. Countable as civic ritual metrics only; no new specimen claim.
