Image takedown policy
Some case files show sacred places, graves and memorials, human remains, or ceremonial objects, because those are the real subjects of the story. Every image is freely licensed (public domain, US government, CC0, or Creative Commons BY / BY-SA via Wikimedia Commons) and credited with its source and license. Pages with images of deceased persons, remains or ceremonial objects carry a cultural notice at the top.
Who can ask
- A tribe, nation, Traditional Owner group or other Indigenous community, about images of its sacred sites, ceremonies, objects or ancestors.
- A family member, about images of a deceased relative or their grave.
- A photographer or rights holder, about their own work.
What we do
- We will remove or replace the image within about 72 hours of a request. We don't ask you to prove a legal claim.
- We log the removal on the Corrections page (without personal details) and keep the case text.
- We never add map pins or directions to sacred sites, graves or ceremonial places.
- These pages are editorial only: no ads and no affiliate links.
How to ask
A dedicated takedown address is being set up and will be listed here. The 72-hour commitment applies from the day it goes live.
