Westall, 6 April 1966: A Melbourne School and a Saucer

Around 11 a.m., pupils and teachers at Westall High School in Melbourne's southeast watched an object descend into a nearby paddock and leave. Dozens of witnesses, a few newspaper stories, and decades of argument followed.

On the morning of Wednesday 6 April 1966, students at Westall High School in Clayton South, a growing suburb in Melbourne’s southeast, saw a silvery object glide down over a field known as the Grange and disappear behind trees. Children ran across to look, and some teachers followed. Many said it rose again and left at speed, and that small aircraft circled it.

In the papers

The Dandenong Journal and other papers ran stories that week. After that the case went quiet until researchers, especially Shane Ryan, interviewed witnesses decades later and found dozens who still remembered it. Some said they were told by teachers or men in suits not to talk.

What it was

Searches of the National Archives of Australia have found no file. Proposals include a high-altitude balloon from a US–Australian cosmic-ray project, or a target drone. None is confirmed. The site of the Grange is now a reserve with a flying-saucer-themed playground.

Ledger status

Marked disputed. Many witnesses and contemporary press; no physical evidence or official file. Map position is suburb level.
