Tehran, 19 September 1976: Two Iranian F-4s and a Light

After calls about a bright light over Tehran, the Imperial Iranian Air Force scrambled two F-4 Phantoms. The pilots reported instrument and weapons failures as they closed in. A US Defense Intelligence Agency report circulated the account; skeptics point to Jupiter and faulty equipment.

Shortly after midnight on 19 September 1976, residents of Tehran phoned the airport and air force about a bright object in the sky. The Imperial Iranian Air Force sent an F-4 Phantom from Shahrokhi air base. Its pilot reported that as he approached, his instruments and communications failed; when he turned away, they came back. A second F-4 went up and its crew said a smaller object came out of the light and headed toward them. When the pilot tried to fire a missile, his weapons panel went dead.

The US file

The US defence attaché in Tehran sent a report of the crews’ accounts to Washington, and a Defense Intelligence Agency analyst rated it highly for credibility. Released through freedom-of-information requests, it became one of the most cited military UFO documents.

The other reading

Philip Klass argued that the light was the planet Jupiter, unusually bright that month, and that the F-4s’ electronics had a history of faults. The pilots’ accounts and the DIA memo remain on the record.
