Rendlesham Forest, December 1980: Lights Outside an Air Base

Over several nights in late December 1980, US Air Force personnel at RAF Woodbridge in Suffolk reported strange lights in the forest outside the gate. A deputy base commander's memo made it Britain's most famous UFO case. Skeptics point to a fireball, a lighthouse and bright stars.

Just after Christmas 1980, security patrols at RAF Woodbridge, a Suffolk base then used by the United States Air Force, reported lights moving among the pines of Rendlesham Forest outside the east gate. Airmen went into the trees to look. Two nights later the deputy base commander, Lieutenant Colonel Charles Halt, went out with a team, a tape recorder and a radiation meter.

The memo

On 13 January 1981 Halt wrote a one-page memo to the UK Ministry of Defence titled “Unexplained Lights.” It described a glowing object in the forest, marks on the ground, and later lights in the sky. Released in the United States in 1983 under freedom-of-information law, the memo turned a local rumour into “Britain’s Roswell.”

The ordinary readings

Researcher Ian Ridpath matched the timeline against known sources: a bright fireball seen over southern England in the early hours of 26 December, the beam of the Orford Ness lighthouse, which flashes in the direction the men were looking, and bright stars low on the horizon. The MoD said the events posed no threat to national security. Witnesses have since told longer, stranger versions that are not in the 1981 memo, and the Ledger keeps those separate from the record.

Ledger status

Marked disputed. The memo is real and the witnesses were serious, but nothing physical survives that needs an exotic explanation, and a well-argued prosaic account exists. Map position is approximate (town or region level).
