Flannan Isles, December 1900: Three Lighthouse Keepers Gone
When the relief boat reached the new lighthouse on Eilean Mòr in the Outer Hebrides on 26 December 1900, the light had been out for days and all three keepers were missing. The board's own superintendent concluded that a storm wave had taken them.

The lighthouse on Eilean Mòr, the largest of the Flannan Isles west of Lewis, was lit for the first time in December 1899. A year later it went dark. A passing steamer reported on 15 December 1900 that no light was showing. Bad weather kept the relief tender, the Hesperus, away until 26 December. When it arrived, nobody came down to meet it.
What the board found
The relief keeper found the station empty: beds unmade, a meal cleared, the clocks stopped, and two of the three sets of oilskins gone. Superintendent Robert Muirhead of the Northern Lighthouse Board inspected the island and found heavy damage at the west landing, including a box of ropes and gear torn from a crevice well above the normal waterline. He concluded that the men had gone down to secure gear during a storm and been carried off by an exceptionally large wave.
How the legend grew
Later magazine versions added a half-eaten meal, an overturned chair and logbook entries describing the keepers weeping and praying. Historians who have checked the board’s records have found no such entries. The core mystery, three men lost without bodies, is real; the supernatural trimmings are not.
Ledger status
Marked cited. The disappearance is documented and the official explanation is plausible; the eerie details are later additions. Map position is approximate (town or region level).
