Brazil's "Official UFO Night," 19 May 1986

Radar and pilots across four Brazilian states tracked lights for hours, and the Air Force sent five fighters after them. Four days later the Air Minister told the press: 'Technically, we have no explanation.' The Air Force's own report, released in 2009, called the phenomena solid.

On the evening of Monday 19 May 1986, an air traffic controller at São José dos Campos airport, Sérgio Mota da Silva, saw a bright, colour-changing light hanging in the sky and checked with Guarulhos: no traffic. Over the next hours, airliners, ground witnesses and military radars reported lights over São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais and Goiás. One small plane carried Ozires Silva, the founder of Embraer, who tried to approach a light and watched it vanish.

The fighters

The Air Defence Operations Centre sent five jets from Santa Cruz and Anápolis bases: F-5s and Mirages, on non-aggressive interception orders. Pilots reported lights that disappeared as they closed in, and radar returns that seemed to trail behind them. None of them got a clear look.

On the record

On 23 May the Air Minister, Brigadier Octávio Moreira Lima, held a press conference with the pilots and controllers and said 21 objects had been detected and that, “technically,” the Air Force had no explanation. A report dated 2 June 1986 called the phenomena solid and apparently intelligent; it stayed secret until 2009, when Brazil sent its UFO files to the National Archives. Ufologists call it Brazil’s best case; nobody has shown what the lights were.
